In 2016, 1.48 million tourists visited Moldova. This number was down 1.7% from 2015. A large portion of the tourists who visit the country is from Romania and Ukraine. The country has established a visa-free regime for some countries to boost the number of foreign tourists who visit the country.
Citizens of the United States, Canada, Japan, Switzerland, and Turkey can visit Moldova without a visa.
Tourists are not allowed to leave the country with artwork and antiques without permission from the Moldovan Department of Monuments. Failure to do so could result in the items being impounded. Avoid engaging yourself in the usage, possession, and trafficking of drugs. Long prison sentences and hefty fines are handed out to anyone caught.
