Mongolia is a prime tourist destination because of its national museum which displays historic and ethnographic artifacts. Every year, since the last decade, an average of 350,000 foreigners visit Mongolia yearly. In a bid to increase the number of foreign visitors to Mongolia, the government offered special tax exemption of up to 10% of the total investment offered for construction of highly rated hotels. Licenses for tourism business was nullified are tour operators are now not required to pay VAT.
 
Do not buy, sell, kill or capture any protected wild animal or trade its parts without a license. Anyone caught would receive lengthy prison sentences and a fine. Be aware of the local customs and avoid wearing short sleeves, this can be seen as offensive.
 
Nationals of United States, Brazil, Georgia, Serbia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine can visit Mongolia for up to 90 days without a visa. Citizens of Canada, Cuba, Germany, Israel, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, and Russia are allowed to visit the country without a visa for up to 30 days.

Travelers are advised to travel with their medical supplies as medical facilities in the country are limited.

Basic Travel Requirements for South Africans visiting Mongolia

  • A passport that will be valid for at least 6 months after entering Mongolia is required. It must have 2 blank pages for visa stamp.
  • Recent passport photographs that follow the specification for Mongolian visa application.
  • Duly completed and signed visa application form.

  • Proof of financial support for the duration of stay.
  • Proof of accommodation.
  • Copy of return flight tickets.
  • Valid medical insurance.

Foreigners who apply for the tourist visa intend to visit the country for sightseeing, relaxation and recreation purposes. Friends and relatives in Mongolia can also be visited with this visa. If you are visiting a friend or relative in Mongolia, you are required to present an invitation letter containing their home address and telephone number. Proof of hotel accommodation is required if you'll be staying in a hotel during your stay. Original birth certificate is required for minors applying for this visa. Tourists are not allowed to take up paid or unpaid employment while in Mongolia. You also cannot be enrolled in any institution of learning in the country with this visa. Receipt of paid visa application fees should be tendered. South African stay permit is required for non-citizens. If you are retired, you should submit a proof of your retirement fund. Avoid drinking tap water in the country as they are likely to be contaminated. At the expiration of your visa, you are expected to leave the country. Immunization against hepatitis A and B is greatly recommended. The visa is valid for 3 months and  allows a stay of 30 days which can be extended for another 30 days if you apply at least 4 days before its due date.  You are expected to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations of your visa.

The visa is meant for travellers visiting Mongolia for business purposes. This visa allows the applicant to meet up with existing and intending partners in Mongolia. You can negotiate and sign business contracts while you are in the country. Holders of the business visa can attend summits, conferences and trade fairs while in the country. An invitation letter from the host company should be provided. This letter should contain the office address of the company, the duration and purpose of the applicant's visit. Certificate of business registration of the host company should also be provided. Applicants should also submit a letter from their current employer in South Africa stating that they are aware of the business leave and the duration. This letter has to be on the company's letterhead. A letter of consent signed by parents of minors should be provided. In the cases of prior business dealings with the host company, a proof is required. Applicants are advised to be immunized against hepatitis A and B before travelling to Mongolia. You cannot be paid for any of the services you render while in the country. The visa is valid for 90 days.
